Medium Term Accommodation isn’t a standalone NDIS support. It forms part of your broader home and living support package when you need somewhere temporary to stay. The situation? You have a confirmed long-term home lined up, but you can’t move in yet because your disability supports aren’t ready.
Â
This differs significantly from Short Term Accommodation (STA), which focuses on respite and includes meals plus all daily costs. MTA only covers accommodation costs themselves. It’s also different from Supported Independent Living (SIL), which provides permanent housing solutions.
Â
The NDIS generally funds MTA for up to 90 days maximum. Extensions happen only in limited situations with proper evidence. Your confirmed long-term housing arrangement must exist before MTA funding gets approved.
Â
Every person’s housing crisis presents different challenges. We’ve worked through these situations many times before. At QP Care, our experienced teams understand housing uncertainty creates enormous stress. Families often struggle during these transitions too. Our multilingual staff work within NDIS guidelines to provide appropriate temporary accommodation support while respecting cultural backgrounds and individual circumstances.
MTA gets included in your NDIS plan as part of your home and living supports under ‘Assistance with Daily Life’. The funding covers accommodation costs only. Food, electricity, internet, and daily living expenses remain your responsibility.
Â
Our team helps you understand MTA eligibility requirements. We assist with gathering the evidence NDIS planners need. The process involves demonstrating your long-term housing arrangements while proving you can’t stay in your current accommodation. Many participants find the evidence requirements complex during stressful situations. We guide you through each requirement systematically.
The NDIS requires you to meet all three criteria for MTA eligibility:
Format as 3 prominent sections:
You must have a confirmed long-term home you’ll move into after MTA. Evidence required includes tenancy offers, home modification agreements, or letters from accommodation providers. Simply looking for housing doesn’t qualify – the arrangement must be confirmed.
This might involve moving back to your own home after modifications. Perhaps you’ve received an offer for supported accommodation but need to wait for availability. Some participants wait for new SDA builds to finish construction.
You can’t move into your long-term home because disability supports aren’t ready yet. Examples include waiting for assistive technology installation, home modifications to be completed, or SIL services to become available.
Â
General home repairs don’t qualify for MTA funding. The delays must relate specifically to your disability support needs. Roof repairs or standard maintenance wouldn’t meet this criterion.
You can’t remain in your current accommodation while waiting for your long-term home. This might involve hospital discharge situations, support arrangement breakdowns, or accommodation that no longer meets your disability needs.
Â
If staying with family or friends remains reasonable, MTA funding typically wouldn’t be approved. The NDIS considers informal support options before funding temporary accommodation.
MTA funding covers accommodation costs only. Additional supports get funded separately if they meet NDIS criteria:
Your existing NDIS supports continue during MTA stays. Community participation activities can continue. Personal care supports from your plan remain available. Additional supports may be funded if they meet NDIS criteria and relate to your MTA situation.
Some participants transitioning from MTA eventually need our 24-hour care services in their permanent accommodation. Others require minimal ongoing support once settled.
QP Care assists participants with MTA applications and support coordination across Melbourne’s north western communities:
The MTA application process involves significant evidence gathering. Confirmed long-term housing documentation proves essential. Support breakdown evidence might be required. Medical reports could support your application. We help coordinate this evidence collection process.
Our experience with NDIS planning meetings helps participants present their situations effectively. Different planners sometimes interpret guidelines differently. We understand these variations and tailor applications accordingly.
Housing crises affect different cultural communities in various ways. Extended family involvement varies between cultures. Religious or dietary requirements might influence accommodation choices. Location preferences often relate to community connections and support networks.
Our multilingual team understands these cultural nuances throughout the MTA period. Language support extends beyond basic communication during housing uncertainty. Cultural practices around family involvement get respected during accommodation planning.
We maintain relationships with accommodation providers across Melbourne’s north west. These connections help during urgent MTA situations. Understanding local housing markets assists with both temporary and permanent housing searches.
Property locations consider accessibility requirements, transport links, and community connections. MTA accommodation often influences eventual permanent housing choices. We help participants explore different areas during their temporary stays.
All support coordination follows NDIS guidelines strictly. Professional development continues for all staff members. Person-centred care principles guide interactions during accommodation transitions. Individual circumstances and cultural backgrounds receive complete respect throughout the MTA process.
We understand MTA eligibility criteria thoroughly. Evidence requirements change between different situations. Hospital discharge applications differ from standard MTA requests. Justice system transitions involve modified criteria. Our experience with various scenarios helps prepare stronger applications.
NDIS planners interpret guidelines differently sometimes. We understand these variations and adapt applications accordingly. Successful MTA applications require precise evidence presentation meeting specific criteria.
MTA applications often coincide with plan reviews and housing transitions. Multiple assessments might be required simultaneously. Allied health reports could strengthen applications. We coordinate these various requirements efficiently during stressful periods.
Fragmented support during housing crises creates additional pressure. Our coordination approach means fewer providers to manage. Communication between different services gets streamlined through our involvement.
Our multilingual team understands how housing uncertainty affects different cultural communities. Family involvement expectations vary significantly between cultures. Religious practices might influence accommodation requirements. Dietary needs could affect accommodation choices.
CALD communities sometimes face additional barriers during housing transitions. Language difficulties compound NDIS application complexity. Cultural isolation during accommodation changes creates extra stress. Our culturally responsive approach addresses these specific challenges throughout the MTA process.
We understand Melbourne’s north west housing markets comprehensively. Accommodation availability varies between different areas. Transport links affect daily living during MTA stays. Community connections influence both temporary and permanent housing choices.
Local knowledge extends beyond basic geography. Cultural community locations matter for many participants. Religious facility access might influence accommodation preferences. Shopping and service availability affects daily living during temporary stays.
The NDIS generally funds MTA for up to 90 days maximum. Extensions require evidence that your long-term housing needs more time due to disability-related delays. Home modification delays might justify extensions. New build SDA completion delays could warrant additional time. Evidence from builders, suppliers, or accommodation providers supports extension requests.
Duration depends entirely on when your confirmed long-term housing becomes available. Simple transitions resolve more quickly. Complex situations involving multiple disability supports might take longer.
Confirmed long-term housing evidence proves essential – tenancy offers, home modification agreements, or SDA placement letters. Evidence that disability supports aren’t ready yet – builder quotes, equipment delivery schedules, or support service wait lists. Documentation showing you can’t stay in current accommodation – medical reports, accommodation provider letters, or family circumstance changes.
Hospital discharge situations have modified evidence requirements. Justice system discharge involves different documentation. We help coordinate appropriate evidence for different situations.
You can choose accommodation that fits within NDIS price limits. Daily accommodation rates get specified in price guides. Costs above these limits become your responsibility. Accessibility requirements influence accommodation choices significantly. Cultural or religious requirements might affect location preferences.
We help identify suitable accommodation options within funding parameters. Emergency situations limit choices initially. Planned transitions allow more accommodation selection time.
Contact your support coordinator immediately when delays occur. Evidence of delays must be provided to the NDIS. Builder reports, supplier delays, or accommodation provider updates support extension requests. The NDIS assesses each extension request individually against their criteria.
Extensions aren’t automatic – they require justification based on disability-related delays. General market delays might not qualify for extensions. Evidence must demonstrate the delays relate to your specific disability support needs.
Contact your support coordinator or NDIA planner to discuss MTA eligibility. Evidence gathering begins immediately – confirmed housing documentation, disability support delay proof, and current accommodation situation details. The NDIS aims to decide within 10 days of receiving complete applications.
You can also make a referral through our online form for MTA support coordination assistance. This helps with evidence gathering and application preparation.
Housing situations requiring MTA often develop quickly. Early discussion about eligibility helps preparation if situations change. Understanding NDIS requirements before crises occur enables faster responses when needed.
